LEAD INCLUSION COHORT Teaming with Families in Inclusive Schools
September - October 2022
The International Inclusive Leadership Program is a
5-course program through San Diego State University that
prepares leaders, general educators, learning support
educators, counselors, and other school personnel to
lead teams in the design and delivery of effective
accommodations, modifications, and interventions within
general education settings.
Teaming with Families in Inclusive Schools
In this course, participants explore the interconnected
nature of families and culture on schools and the vital
need to honor and facilitate collegial relationships
with students' families in order to
maximize student success. Participants learn to be
intentionally inviting to families and utilize the
"family lens" when considering school policy
and procedures. Participants practice using multiple
tools to gather information from families about student
routines and needs and to create high quality,
student-centered ILP/IEPs that reflect family
priorities. Other topics involve using intentional
empathy to overcome judgement, handing difficult
conversations, and celebrating cultural diversity in
schools.
Dr. Abbey Love is an Educational Psychologist with a
background in teaching and consulting. Her postgraduate
training was completed in the US at the University of
Kentucky where she studied self-efficacy of teachers and
police officers and started a non-profit aimed at
educating first responders about autism. She presently
works as a researcher at the Aspect Research Centre for
Autism Practice in Australia and also teaches inclusion
courses to teachers and school leaders. Her research is
broadly interested in translating educational research to
professionals who support individuals with autism
including work with law enforcement officers, teachers,
school leaders, and parents and families. She is
committed to practice-focused research that has direct
implications for community and individuals.
SCIS Testimonial
“Teaming with Families in Inclusive Schools is one
of the most useful professional development courses I
have ever attended. Abbey Love brings years of
expertise as a researcher and parent that is insightful,
grounding and inspiring. I highly recommend this
course to anyone wanting to partner with parents and
deepen relationships with the community.”
