CHINESE CULTURE
Deepening our Connection to our Host Culture
Students at SCIS are challenged to go beyond the confines of the classroom, expanding their awareness of the world and fostering respect for cultural diversity.
MANDARIN CHINESE
At SCIS all students may study Mandarin as an additional or native language. From complete beginners to native speakers, the Mandarin program caters to all by recognizing the diverse learning needs of each individual.
Students in the Primary Years Programme (PYP) have a variety of ways to approach learning, such as project-based learning, story-telling, and other activities related to Chinese culture.
All students in the Middle Years Programme (MYP) & Diploma Programme (DP) can study mandarin either through Language and Literature classes or Language acquisition.
CHINESE CULTURAL CELEBRATIONS
The language program is further enhanced through school assemblies, performances, presentations, and field trips around Shanghai. Our annual Chinese New Year assemblies, for example, are one of the many ways we celebrate Chinese culture and showcase language skills through songs, dances, story performances, Chinese rhymes & poems, and artifacts.
CHINA TRIPS
All upper school students have the opportunity to participate in extended overnight China Trips during the academic school year. These are approximately weeklong trips to exciting destinations across China. In addition to enhancing students’ understanding of Chinese culture and geography, this unique learning experience allows students to develop more interpersonal and team-building skills that lead to greater self-reliance and independence.
