ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE
Meeting unique learning needs
Our English as an Additional Language (EAL) program is designed to provide academic instruction and support for non-native English speakers.
English language learners will receive help in all aspects of English language acquisition by learning important skills in vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
All teachers are taught the skills & strategies to be able to support students' language development. All teachers are teachers of language.
Students with limited English proficiency, or transferring from non-English speaking schools, will be assessed to determine the level of EAL support required. EAL classes are required for any student whose oral and written language is not sufficient to function satisfactorily in academic subjects. This may include both MYP English Language Acquisition classes and EAL Resource classes. For further information, please refer to the EAL Handbook.
EAL IN LOWER SCHOOL
Our Lower School program supports English language development in the context of our English learners’ school day. Our program follows research and evidence-based best practices in academic language acquisition. It is guided by WIDA’s English Language Development Standards and is aligned with IB PYP philosophies.
EAL IN UPPER SCHOOL
The Upper School program first concentrates on equipping students with the vocabulary and structures for meeting immediate school needs. As students gain confidence, they move onto broader themes designed to develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills to a level that will enable them to participate effectively in all regular classroom lessons including English Language and Literature.
